A letter I sent to Mayor Richard M. Daley on July 21, 2008.
Dear Mayor Daley,
Please consider the following statistics.
Number of fatal shootings in Chicago last weekend: 7
Number of murders in Chicago between January 1 and June 30, 2008: 229
Percent of these murders that were gun-related: 80
Number of American deaths in Iraq during the same six-month period: 208
It is unclear what you are doing to curb gun violence in Chicago. But I can tell you this much: it isn’t working. You would be well advised to step it up a few notches.
